The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday that it has approved the use of levitra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
The drug is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men who have a history of impotence. The approval of levitra will be based on a clinical study designed to determine the efficacy and safety of the drug in men with ED.
The FDA granted a tentative approval to Levitra, which is made by Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline, in November 2001. It was the first drug approved for the treatment of ED in men aged 18 to 41, although it was not previously approved for the treatment of ED.
“This is the first FDA approval of levitra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and it’s our hope that this approval will help increase awareness and practice of treating ED,” said John L. Smith, Ph. D., director of the FDA’s Office of the Director for Policy and Technologies. “We will continue to monitor the progress of this important study and provide information to physicians and patients regarding the effectiveness and safety of the drug.”
Levitra works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men with ED achieve and sustain an erection. Levitra is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor that is given in pill form for men with ED. The medication has been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men who have a history of impotence. Levitra has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of ED in men aged 18 to 41.
“The FDA has been working closely with its partners and regulatory agencies to ensure that we continue to take steps to ensure that the efficacy of the Levitra drug remains consistent and predictable,” Smith said.
Levitra is currently being studied in three phase III trials designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the medication in patients with erectile dysfunction. The first, which will be conducted at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, will consist of 6 clinical studies involving approximately 1,200 men with ED. The second study, conducted at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, is a randomized controlled study involving 890 men with ED who have been followed for up to 1 year.
“This new study is the first to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Levitra in men with ED,” Smith said. “This study will allow us to determine the most effective and safe way to treat ED in men. We expect the findings to take place within the first year of this study.”
The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health through a grant awarded to Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1997. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
